Scheduling And Accomplishing Go Hand In Hand!

Wow! The year is basically half over! I can’t believe it has gone so quickly. So many changes, lots of progress in some areas, not so much in others. I think my primary challenge is time management. I start every day with great intentions, and a long to-do list. And at the end of the day, while I have made progress, the to-do list doesn’t seem to get any shorter because I end up adding as much (or sometimes more) than I cross off. Hmmmm.

I remember a story about a jar that they told in a time management class I attended. You add the big rocks to the jar first (more important items), and then keep adding smaller and smaller stuff until the last thing you add is water. I think it was meant to show that you should do the big things first and then work the smaller ones in around the big things. But I have a problem with trading off big things for urgent things – and urgent keeps winning. Probably if I focused more on the big things, there would be fewer urgent things. At least that is what I would like to think.

I have said in the past that I need to build more structure in to my day. I need to focus on the big things. I need to schedule better. Etc., etc., etc. But all I keep getting is more “need to” and not enough “done”. So in keeping with my focus to keep the promises I make – including the ones to myself! – I am making a promise (with you all as my witnesses) to clearly identify the big things and schedule them first. And manage the “jar” of my life better so I can accomplish the goals I have set for myself. Onward and upward! (I’ll keep you posted on how I’m doing.) Want to play along? Post a comment about what works for you in getting more out of each day. Enjoy!
